Here is an interesting penthouse duplex transformation achieved by the designers from FORMA Design in the Adams Morgan area of Washington DC. A distinct Zen minimalism serenity is what defines this Washington DC residential space. Transformed from a dated Colonial home to a uber-chic asian-inspired home, this project was awarded the 2010 Bronze Award for Residential Design by the International Interior Design Association’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Designed to correspond to the client’s needs and wishes, this apartment offers its inhabitants a relaxed lifestyle in a clear and open space surrounded by warm colors taken from the nature, quality furnishings, natural materials and luxury modern extravagances.

By removing some walls, throughout the apartment the spaces seem wide open and more connected to one another. The south wall of the living room is marked by French doors that give onto a long balcony. Upstairs, it was removed a wall of shallow closets that led to the master bedroom. That change opened up the hallway and made the whole second floor feel more airy. The wall between the two south-facing bedrooms was also removed, making one large guest room and painting studio.

The old-fashioned mantelpiece from the living room was transformed into a more modern statement featuring now a monumental stacked-stone fireplace from Sentousai porcelain mosaic. They also add the latest Zen touch to the living room, felted-wool “boulder” seats that resemble river stones found in Japanese gardens. The master bathroom includes things such a dry-heat infrared sauna and extravagantly sleek Arne Jacobsen-designed Vola faucets and shower system. The major extravagance is the kitchen outfitted with more than $30,000 worth of appliances and cabinets from Poliform Washington by Sagart Studio and hidden LED lighting that changes according to the mood. The overall result is quite impressive and we believe such a house makeover is always a great source of inspiration.
