1. Architectural Lighting

The most common types of architectural lighting include valance, soffit, and cove. All three of these lighting options will be integrated into the structure of the room. For example, cove lighting is found in a shelf, ledge, or recessed higher on a wall. The light is then bounced to the upper wall or the ceiling. Soffit lighting is found in cornice or soffit close to the ceiling. The light radiates down and washes the wall with light. Valance lighting is located in glass, metal, or wood valances (this is a horizontal shield) and mounted over a window or higher on the wall. The light will bounce up and down. The technique of bouncing light off the ceilings and walls is referred to as indirect lighting, which is preferred by professionals because indirect lighting reduces glare and shadows.

2. Recessed Lighting

These are installed above the home’s ceiling. This lighting type has an opening that is completely flush with the ceiling. Recessed light fixtures require a minimum of six inches of clearance over the ceiling, and proper insulation is critical to making sure that condensation does not make its way into the fixture. Recessed lighting will send a somewhat narrow band of light in a single direction. It is commonly used as accent, task, or ambient lighting.
