Dress Up Your Home Interior With Coffered Ceilings

Traditionally coffered ceilings were constructed of hollow box beams being fitted together in a grid. Often times the coffered ceilings seen in historic homes and buildings had beams built into the ceiling itself, making it a significant part of the structure instead of something purely decorative.

In today’s world there are much more versatile options for coffered ceilings. You can find these types of ceilings not only in numerous different grid, shapes, and styles, but also find DIY coffered ceiling kits or contractors that install coffered ceiling on existing ceilings. On the infographic below, Jason Tilton of Tilton Coffered Ceilings shows what every homeowner should know about coffered ceilings.

You may have heard coffered ceilings referred to as a different name, such as a:

Although there are four main types of coffered ceilings (traditional, geometric, rustic and contemporary), there really are only very small limits to the size of each coffer or the shape. Whether you like the minimalistic look for a sparse grid, admire the drama of a tightly packed square grid or want something unusual like circle-shaped coffers, chances are it can be done.

Coffered ceilings also aren’t limited by material types. Naturally, any type of wood can be used to make these box beams. It is also possible to use a medium density fiberboard (MDF) or a high density urethane foam (HDU). Some even opt for plaster. MDF and HDU is usually the material of choice for DIY or retrofit coffered ceilings as they are lightweight and easy to install.

Coffered ceilings are an excellent choice for any style of home. Not only do they look fantastic, but also are an investment. Aside from personal pleasure, realtors have also found that 9′ ceilings with a decorative design, like coffers, are more valuable to prospective buyers. These ceilings also add value in the form of dulling sound.

If you’re ready to ditch your boring ceiling and really add elegance to your home, coffered ceilings are a wise choice.
