Ecological Design Inspired by the Iconic Eames Chair

Designers Olivia Meillassoux and Céline Coutard took the idea of the iconic Eames Chair design from 50’s further and came up with a modern ecological design of that chair. Unlike the well-known Eames Chair designed by  Hermann Miller in 1956 which was made of fiberglass and resin, Rolling Chair pays tribute to environmental responsability which consists of bamboo rolled up and glued together with ecological resin, thus resulting a highly original and attractive piece of furniture.

It’s ecological design evoking natural and organic forms gives the chair an instantaeous dose of fantastic, rustic appeal: rough and smooth in the same time. How did they achieve this? Designer Olivia Meillassoux compared the Rolling Chair with ” a rough stone that has been polished so as to become a precious stone”. The interior is composed of bamboo strips shaping free-forms design which are very apparent on the back rest and seating space, natural wood feet screwed in the seat, while the exterior is lacquered, homogeneous, painted on the outside in a vivid green color that beautifully contrasts with the natural bamboo color. It’s a great addition for everyone’s interior who want a unique chair design, especially for those who pay attention and are preoccupied about environment.

  • Best Skyscraper in the World: Porta Fira Hotel, Barcelona

Best Skyscraper in the World: Porta Fira Hotel, Barcelona

More than 300 skyscrapers around the world competed for „the best skyscraper in the world” – Emporis Skyscraper Award 2010, but the architecture experts from 67 countries who judged gave the 11th prestigious designation to Porta Fira Hotel in Barcelona. Even if its height measures only 113 meters and 26 floors, lower than the other structures which have won the other places on top 10,the outstanding red tower received Emporis Skyscraper Award 2010, the world’s most renowned prize for high-rise architecture, for its impressive aesthetic beauty and very good integration into its urban environment.

Only to mention, the second place winner was Burj Khalifa in Dubai which was admired for its technical achievements and thirdly Tour CMA CGM in Marseille which was recognised as a symbol of modernity. What is so special at this hotel? We think everything from its architectural presence to its high standard servicies and luxury amenities and who could describe them better if not the people who have experienced it already. One thing is sure: its breathtaking exterior design is undoubtedly the one that created this international buzz, which has described by the architects as „the biggest chalenge” from the project.

The surreal  spiraling structure with complex geometry that increases in size as it rises  was conceptualised by Japanese renowned architect Toyo Ito& Associates in collaboration with b720 Fermin Vazquez Arquitectos and constructed by FCC Construcción on the outskirts of Barcelona in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, one of Barcelona’s busiest development areas. The hotel belongs to the Hoteles Santos chain and is part of the city’s urban regeneration project and also of the Barcelona skyline since 2010, becoming already one of the architectural icons of the city as well as a reference point for the business world.

Resembling a lotus flower, this modern building is impossible not to be observed from a distance since it has that striking red colour and such a height. Concrete and aluminum are the materials used to create this unique “double skin” design: the inner layer is made of stainless steel sandwich panels, while the outer layer of skin is made of aluminum tubes coated with a red metallic resin paint. The architect’s abstract interpretation is captivating even more if we think to its sleek, gorgeous and monochromatic interior design that complements the exterior creating an extraordinary visual experience.

Its 320 rooms and suites are spacious, bright and sophisticated and decorated with the finest quality of furniture are always ready to offer comfort in an exquisite way and magnificent views of Barcelona city. The best skyscraper in the world features also nine large, state-of-the-art meeting rooms equipped with the latest technology and a plenary room. The hotel has a meeting capacity of 1,357 and the largest meeting room can accommodate 740 occupants.

  • Interior Design Trends

    Interior Design Trends

Interior design trends are an often contended issue with everyone’s style and taste changing from room to room. Lately, bold colours, or vibrant wallpaper on feature walls have become highly fashionable. The minimalist style of décor has also earned its place. However, whatever you decide bear in my mind this is your living space, you will spend more time here than anywhere else, so the best style for you is the one you like. After all, fashion is just the taste of the masses.
If you are redecorating a bedroom, some simple tips to consider for maximizing the potential of the space is to first empty the room, sit in the centre and visualise how you would want the end result to look. A good tip is to take some masking tape and mark on the walls/floor the size of the furniture that has caught your eye, or the type of furniture you would like in the room. This is an easy way to see how much space you will have left to play around with once filled, and whether this is a liveable size.

You need to enjoy being in your bedroom for a good night’s sleep. Therefore this is certainly one of the most essential rooms to re-decorate as soon as you begin to feel its current theme/décor is a little outdated. While it’s best to try and avoid overly heavy colours that create an intense presence in the room, bold romantic reds, or subtle elegant greys can help to nurse you off to sleep. If your room is a little smaller perhaps, and you want to maximize the space you do have then lighter tones will add space to the room. Light magnolias, whites and yellows will give the impression of space. As well, carpets can make a room shrink as soon as they are laid. Laminate flooring, or tile flooring, or the ever growing rustic look of varnished floor boards will give the impression of space in the room and contribute very well to the minimalist look. Removing excess clutter and being creative with your storage options is another handy tip for maximizing the perceived space of the bedroom. Under the bed storage space, or using tins and jars to store clutter that have previously plagued your shelves provide a breathing space that is naturally relaxing and will provide a better night’s sleep.

If you have bedside tables or a night-stand in your bedroom, another simple tip would be to add fabric skirts draping to the floor. This provides space in which to store items using the space you would have otherwise wasted. This will again make the room look larger, provide a calmer feel within and promote more natural, healthy rest.
So once you have implemented the new fundamentals; that is the walls, floors and the lighting, it’s time to settle on some furniture. Now aside from the creative storage solutions discussed above, fashionable furniture and modern designs are easily achieved following some simple themes in the industry.
Firstly, rustic designs compliment the minimalist theme in the bedroom excellently. Again though, bear in mind style before substance is not always appropriate. Whichever furniture you decide ensure it’s as functional as it is stylish or what you’ll have is another addition to the clutter of the room that you will never use.

Recycled rustic furniture’s are a growing trend. The style works exceptionally well when paired with modern design elements and complimentary colours. As well, reclaimed furniture options are often designed with the environment in mind. Made ostensibly with wood from sustainable forests or recycled materials they provide a clean conscience to allow the user to relax in style and comfort.
Cooler colours are also becoming more popular within the furniture market. Coupled especially well with lighter walls, furniture’s of grey or beiges instil a feeling of calm that works especially well in the bedroom. The neutrality of the colours again does not provide any one focal point in the room, though subtly shape the space and leave the room seeming larger.
One final point worth noting is that things that are traditionally associated with the bedroom don’t necessarily need to be. For example, do you really need to store all of your clothes, books, dvd’s and cd’s in your bedroom? If you have a spare room, why not turn it into a walk-in wardrobe, or store less frequently worn items of clothing there removing the need for bulky wardrobes or chest of drawers.

Images and furniture interior are from www.shop4furniture.net
The thing to maintain is encourage your own creativity. You don’t need a Laurence Llewellyn Bowen to makeover your bedroom; everybody is capable of designing their own space. Interior design is simply a matter of opinion and taste. This is forever changing and not one person has the same as the next. Therefore inspired design doesn’t have to be straight off of the television but more about adjusting what you already have to suit what you want to achieve. Remember, space is the element which you can’t really alter so as long as your attempts are centred on the acceptance of, and maximization of the space you have at your disposal then you can adjust the décor/colours to produce a comfortable liveable setting. Light colours and sensible furniture options can produce exactly this, and does not need to cost the earth. Simple yet elegant is a good guide to follow and remember, over complication of anything rarely yields good results!

  • Unique Concept of a Floating Solar Resort

Unique Concept of a Floating Solar Resort

If you are tired to go on vacation and stay at classic hotels, Italian industrial designer Michele Puzzolante offers a great solution. He has designed the concept of a luxury floating solar resort, a project worth almost 125 mil. dollars. The resort in fact represents a new era of advanced construction techniques, based on industrial design rather than traditional architecture. Ideal for living in marinas connected to front beach hotels, it will be both accommodation, luxury submarine and yacht. Besides the fact that both inside and outside aesthetics is awesome, this innovative hospitality concept promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle and it will be constructed in harmony with its natural surroundings relying on renewal resources.

The floating resort will be covered completely in a photovoltaic skin, which will absorb sunlight energy from the outside and artificial lighting energy from the inside, therefore it will be 100% self-sufficient and non-polluting. Reaching twenty meters in length, the luxurious accomodation is designed for six persons as a modular system, with a series of separate floating units and will have a transparent capsule built like a tourist submarine with a thick glass enclosure that provides a 360 degrees view for those fascinated by watching exotic fishes, dolphins, sharks and any other sea species.

It’s big enough for six armchairs and features a ring of 200 watts spot light to illuminate the underwater life when there’s no sunlight. It consists of two double and two single bedrooms, a large kitchen, dining area, a living room and a pilot room, all designed in an exquisite unmistakable Italian style. Here are photos with this original project and it you want more information, check out also the video.

Futurist Australian High Speed Train by HASSEL

Amid national debates from Australia on environmental, economical and social issues, Australian firm Hassell envisioned in 2011 a new concept for a futurist high speed train as a reliable, safer, faster and eco-friendly alternative for future travel one of the busiest air traffic corridors in the world. Travelling with hundreds of miles per hour, the large distances between Australian capital and regional cities would take only a couple of hours.

The Australian High Speed Vehicle (A-HSV) as it was named shows an impressive sleek design inspired by the brut lines of the iconic Australian speed machine the 1960s HK Monaro. With double-deck and posh interior perks, the high speed train offers spacious and modern open plan commuter seating or private berths for business meetings or luxury travellers. Moreover, commuters can have dinner or do their daily shopping before arriving at their destination because the train will have integrated a dining and a lounge bar and also a convenience store. Reducing carbon emissions, providing shorter travel times and reducing transport-related congestion are the main issues which the Australian High Speed Vehicle adresses.
