Envisioned as an urban plaza, this amazing new Busan Cinema Center acts as icon of contemporary culture. Home of the annual Pusan International Film Festival, Coop Himmelb(l)au‘s proposal for the Busan Cinema Center pushes the limits of what we consider to be known in architecture. Designed by Austrian architecture firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, the Busan Cinema Center is the first project in Korea and their second largest ever undertaking. It is a 9-story building with 1 lower ground and represents a new intersection between public space, cultural programs, technology and architecture. This stunning building take a vocabulary already established and well-born clot form, adapted to the context and purpose.

The second largest city in Korea with approximately 3.7 million residents, Busan has a very strong presence with the movie industry. The Center will strengthen Busan as the leading entertainment capital of Asia. Coverage is a recurring theme in CHBL projects, and those spaces are always treated with great imagination. Full manifestation of the concept appears starts with this project along with its incarnation in LEDs world. One of the signature elements of the design is the world’s longest cantilever stretching out over the streetscape 85 meters with an incredible roof surface of 60×160 meters. The space frame cantilever is anchored into the ground through a large cone shaped column housing the main entry and café. Symbol of a beginning of the 21st century, digital sky is a a sky under which do not rain and whose show is tailored for each event. It’s repeatable, is controllable, is our own to the extent that we control.
