You may be sat there putting it off because you think it will be an enormous undertaking. Luckily, you can create the perfect space in the comfort of your own home without breaking the bank or taking months out of your life.
What Are Your Needs?
Before you start throwing things in your basket, you need to decide on what your needs are. You need to consider whether you need storage space, access to electrical outlets, natural light, or somewhere comfy to sit. By jotting down everything your space needs to achieve, you’ll be in a good place to start designing.
Use The Space
If you’re lucky enough to have enough rooms in your house, you’re already winning and can easily repurpose a room for hobbies. When looking for existing space to use, remember to check in with your requirements to ensure it will work. For example, if you want to get a golf simulator and put it into a bright room, the basement isn’t the best idea.
Draw It Up
At this point, you already know what you need from your space and where you’re going to put it. Before you jump in with both feet and start buying your equipment, you need to know if it will all fit. Grab a tape measure and start sketching the room and imagining where everything will go (jot down the measurements of everything). If you do this accurately, you can wind up saving yourself a fortune; it’s cheaper to edit on paper than it is in real life.
The Triangle
Just like a good kitchen works on a triangular pattern between the sink, oven, and fridge, you should base your space in the same way. For instance, if you’re designing a room for woodwork, you need to have easy access between the table saw, workbench, and storage units. Whatever your hobby, choose three key areas that you want to focus on.
Electrical Power
If your hobby involves a lot of gadgets requiring a power supply, you need to work out how you’re going to plug everything in. If you’ve got the budget for it, you could consider upgrading the electrical circuits in your hobby room to keep everything running smoothly. Alternatively, consider investing in a top-of-the-range extension cable.
Lit Up
Ensuring your hobby room has plenty of light is essential for safety as well as practicality. If your hobby is old-school photo development, you can just skip this section. If your hobby requires a lot of concentration, you should aim to get as much natural light into your space as you can. Your chosen hobby will depend on the ambiance you want to achieve through lighting, and there are so many different styles out there.
Storage
Going back to your list of requirements, you need to decide how much storage space you’ll need. For instance, if your hobby is golf, you need to ensure you have space to store all of your clubs and balls whilst making sure they’re easy to access. If you’re limited on space then you can get creative with space by checking out some of these storage ideas.
Designing a hobby room doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming as long as you formulate a detailed plan. If you’re still reading, what are you waiting for? There’s no time like the present to get stuck into an exciting new project.
