  • Should You Prepare Your Home When Close To End Of Life?

Should You Prepare Your Home When Close To End Of Life?

You never know when your time will come, so it’s best to be prepared. If you are worried and want to lift a burden from your heirs, then you might want to consider estate planning, as soon as possible. This will be useful not only for your own peace of mind, but it will also be easier for your heirs.

    What Is Estate Planning?

Estate planning is one of the tasks that usually escapes anyone’s priorities but serve an important role when you aren’t here to settle your assets. Estate planning is the act of preparing a set of documents that will allow your heirs to settle your assets, according to your decision in the event of your death. The planning will include settlement of taxes and bequeathing of assets to certain heirs. Usually, this is done with the help of an estate planner or a lawyer who’s experienced in estate law.

    Should You Prepare Your Home?

One of the high valued assets for everyone is usually their homes. Normally, you’d like your home to be passed on to your family or people you care about.

Now, the question is should you prepare your home when close to the end of your life?

The simple answer to it is ‘Yes’.

Some of the reasons why you should prepare your home when your time is near are listed below:

    1. Avoid Probate

Without preparing your home, you allow your heirs to be open to probate. Probate is when ownership and transfer of the assets need to be verified and authenticated in court. This process can be very tedious and expensive for your heirs. Avoiding probate will be extremely beneficial financially and in the interest of time. This will lift a heavy burden from your heirs.

Leaving the courts to decide might also result in inauthenticity of the bequeathing of assets. If this happens, your heirs will be left with nothing. It’s best to plan them out as soon as possible so as not to trouble your heirs or have your assets go to waste.

    1. Minimize Estate Taxes

To maximize the value of your assets and properties when it gets passed on to your heirs, you need to try minimizing the estate tax. When the land title of your home is transferred to your heirs, the government will be charging estate tax which will be heavy on the pocket. However, the good thing is that you can avoid all this by getting a sound estate planning.

A lawyer can advise you ways on how not to trigger the transfer taxes. There are also new laws that offer exemptions for spouses and annual tax-free gifts for family. This can all be settled during your estate planning process.

    1. Ensuring Your Family’s Home

Another reason why you should prepare your home is to ensure that your family will still have a house to live in after you pass. Estate planning will clearly state how your house will be owned by your family. This will serve as a security when you leave the earth. It will also give you some peace of mind that your family will live comfortably after you pass away.

    1. Avoid Confusion

You should also prepare your loved one to avoid a messy encounters and arguments. When you are no longer here to tell people what you think, it may cause confusion and disruption among family members due to differences in opinion. To eliminate any doubts, estate planning can clearly state to whom your house goes. This will save a lot of time, money, and effort. A little planning will go a long way especially with regards to estate planning.

    1. Choose Distribution and Allocation

Estate planning will allow you to allocate your property, home, and land according to your preference. Without one, your house and money might go to the wrong person. Write down a will so that it clearly states which assets belong to whom.

If the courts can’t arrive at a decision or aren’t able to allocate your houses properly, then everything will just go to that state. This will just be a waste of all your time and effort here on earth if you can’t pass on your belongings to the people that you truly care about.

    Conclusion

Estate planning isn’t only for the rich. Whatever your net worth is, you need to make sure that it goes to the people you truly intend it for. To avoid any confusion or chaos, it’s best to prepare your home in advance because you never know when your time will come. The earlier you plan for it, the better it’s for everybody!

  • What to Look for in a Commercial Builder

What to Look for in a Commercial Builder

The construction industry is a busy one with plenty of competition. This is good for the customer who wants to get a quality job at the right price. There can be problems, however, with choosing the right builder for a commercial project.

This requires different skills and knowledge to house building – although the principle remains the same – and may be more complex. Whatever you need from your commercial builder it is important you choose the right one, so how do you make sure you have done so?

Commercial builders can be involved in many different types of project – from shops and restaurants to factories and offices, so it is essential you pick one that is ready and willing to attend to your requirements. Where do you start when choosing a commercial builder? Here’s our tips so that you can find the right one!

    Ask Around

The first step is to look for recommendations. You may have seen a building site nearby and you can ask there, or if you know of someone who has recently had a builder do some commercial work for them, check them out too.

You should also use online searches and look for local service providers as they may have customer reviews that point you in the right direction. Ask friends and family, and work colleagues, as someone will have used a builder at some point.

    Check Credentials

When you start talking to building companies don’t fail to ask for their credentials. You need to know how long they’ve been in business for, what industry bodies they belong to, whether they have been involved in award-winning or commended projects, what professional qualifications the possess and so on.

All this information should be forthcoming from a builder willing to work with you, so be certain to ask outright.

    Visit a Site

If the builder you are talking to has a project underway, ask if you can pay a visit and see the site in action. You’ll be able to check the way they work and the standard of finish and see how efficient their skilled workers are.

You should also ask to visit former, completed sites and check them out, and talk to the people who now use those buildings to see if they were happy with the work provided. A good and reputable commercial builders such as DiversifiedConstruction.com will be only too happy to help, so again, don’t hesitate to ask.

    Ask About Insurance

Are they insured with the right people? If so, what level of insurance to they carry? This is something you need to be certain of as you don’t want to be held liable for mistakes made by your builder. A reputable commercial builder will be able to show you certificates of proof of insurance, so you have peace of mind before you go ahead and agree to the contract.

    Compare Prices

When you search for builders make sure you give them detailed instructions and allow them to survey the site and provide you with quotations. You may find there are notable differences in the prices you are quoted.

Don’t automatically go for the cheapest example, as you may find you feel more comfortable with a company that has quoted higher. Once you have the quotes – we recommend three at least – go to the builder you were happiest with and see if you can negotiate. It’s always best to work with people you like and trust.

By taking care to choose the right commercial builder you will get the best results, so good luck with your search, keep the above in mind and you will find the right one for you.

  • REM, Light, Deep Sleep: How much do you really need?

REM, Light, Deep Sleep: How much do you really need?

    Overview

Sleep is important for you to lead a healthy and productive life. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), an average adult requires seven or more hours of sleep daily for staying mentally and physically healthy. Your brain and body are busy even when you are asleep so that you can be relaxed, productive, full of energy, and healthy when you wake up from your slumber. It would be helpful for you to know about the different stages of sleep and why each one of them is important for you in achieving the magic figure of seven hours or more daily for the recommended amount of sleep.

    The stages of sleep

In total there are five stages of sleep, some of them are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and some are rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Your body cycles through all of the stages multiple times every night. On an average, each cycle lasts around 90 minutes but some cycles may last even shorter, around 50 minutes and some may last for a longer duration, around 100 minutes or more. Each cycle builds off each other and you progress from one cycle to another. Usually your sleep passes through all five stages three or four times during your entire sleep cycle.

Stages one to three fall under the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep category and stage four falls under rapid eye movement (REM) sleep category.

Here’s how all stages of sleep work together.

    Stage 1

In stage 1,  a person drifts from being awake to being asleep. This is a light, non-rapid eye movement sleep stage. In this stage, your sleep is shallow and not restful. During this stage, you can hear sounds and your sense of awareness is present. Stage 1 is a quick transition stage which does last for very long. In Stage 1, your mind starts to relax, your heartbeat starts to slow down, breathing starts to slow down, eye movement starts to slow down and your muscles start to relax with an occasional twitch. You may start to feel relaxed and dream, but may also feel like you are still not asleep as you transition into stage 2.

    Stage 2

In stage 2, a person is still in light sleep, but drifting into a steadier sleep. In Stage 2, the sleep of a person progresses to a deeper and more relaxed sleep. Stage 2 typically lasts for 30 to 60 minutes, brain activity starts to slow down, which indicates the beginning of deep and restful sleep. In stage 2, a person is asleep but can still be easily awoken. In stage 2, breathing and heartbeat continues to slow down, your muscles start feeling relaxed, and body temperature decreases. Light sleep is very important as it makes up more than half of your sleep cycle.

    Stage 3

In stage 3, a person enters into a deep sleep state. During stage 3, the brain becomes less responsive to outside stimuli, breathing and heartbeat rate slows down further and becomes regular, and muscles relax. Deep sleep is very much about the body and not mind.

    Stage 4

In stage 4, a person enters the deepest sleep state. In stage 4, the body starts to rebuild and repair as tissue growth starts taking place, essential hormones are released and cellular energy is restored.  In stage 4, the brain doesn’t respond to the external stimuli. Stage 4 usually lasts for 20 to 40 minutes.

    REM sleep

In the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep stage, a person starts to dream, their arms and legs become temporarily paralyzed so that they don’t physically act out their dream. Typically, the first REM cycle begins about 90 minutes after a person falls asleep and recurs every 90 minutes. In the REM sleep stage, eyes move around quickly behind eyelids, and the brain becomes very active even if the body is inactive. In the REM sleep stage, breathing and heartbeat rate increases.

How much deep sleep should you get?

As per some studies, on average 13 to 23 percent of sleep is deep sleep for average adults. That means, if a person sleep on bed for 8 hours, the time spent in deep sleep is around 62 to 110 minutes. As a person starts to grow older they require less deep sleep.

Deep sleep allows the mind and body to perform the following functions:

    ·   Physical recovery occurs

    ·   Balancing out of blood sugar levels

    ·   Resetting of metabolism

    ·   Energizing the immune system

    ·   Detoxification of the brain

How much REM sleep should you get?

Sleep researchers believe that REM sleep is important as it allows you to process emotions and solidify some memories. So far sleep researchers have not been able to come to any conclusion on how much minimum REM sleep is good. An average healthy adult gets 20 to 25 percent sleep as REM sleep out of the total number of hours slept.

Some sleep researchers suggest that people who get a higher amount of RAM sleep may suffer from depression.

How much light sleep do you need?

Sleep researchers deem that light sleep is good for a person but they have not been able to arrive at the minimum number of time required for light sleep. Light sleep is non-rapid eye movement sleep and it is the default stage that can’t be avoided if you are asleep at all. Light sleep doesn’t sound important but it is very much part of your sleep cycle. Light sleep may not be as refreshing as deep sleep but it is a necessary stage of sleep cycle for good brain activity.

As a person starts growing older, the major part of the sleep cycle is going to be light sleep.

    Conclusion

According to Sleep Standards, an average adult requires more than seven hours of sleep daily to lead a healthy and productive life. Poor sleep is going to harm your life and you may suffer from insomnia which may lead to other life-threatening diseases like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc. Each stage of your sleep cycle is important.

  • Ways to Improve Your House’s Curb Appeal

Ways to Improve Your House’s Curb Appeal

If you are a person who judges a book by its cover, then you would agree that a home’s exterior does indeed set a stage for what awaits inside. And let’s admit it, we all do it sometimes. If the outside of your home makes a good first impression, there isn’t a person who won’t wish to get a sneak peek of its interior. You don’t need to spend a lot of time analyzing to figure out what makes a great exterior, though. The key is in a nice front door, an eye-pleasing color scheme, and carefully chosen plants, along with a welcoming walkway. However, if you are an owner of a brick home, you are probably aware that even the prettiest of flowers and groomed greenery wouldn’t be able to cover damaged architectural elements or neglected brickwork.

Devoting some time and energy to your home’s exterior is always a smart investment. Whether you are looking for potential homebuyers or simply want to improve it for your own pleasure, know that adding curb appeal to your charming brick house will do the trick. It is a simple and budget-friendly way to boost the value of your house and make it look nicer. If you want to find out what will help your home leave a better first impression, make sure you read on.

4 Tips to Make Your House Exterior Look Perfect

Many people think that once the bricks are laid, it’s impossible to restore or change a brick home. However, this isn’t the case. In fact, you shouldn’t worry about being stuck with the builder’s design choices at all. Here are some useful tips, which when backed by professionals, will show you that doing the repairs on your own is possible if you use the right techniques.

Mend loose mortar and damaged bricks

It’s no surprise that durable bricks offer significant house protection even in the most severe weather conditions. This durability also means that the bricks aren’t immune to damage and require maintenance just as any other feature in and outside of your home. The inflexibility of bricks means that due to extreme temperatures and the water that’s absorbed from rain and snow, it can result in distressed bricks and cause mortar to crumble.

The good news is that you can fix a loose mortar by using a technique called repointing. This means that you won’t have to tear out the whole wall in order to repair a few crumbling spots. It’s also possible to replace damaged bricks, even in old, well-preserved brick homes. It might sound simple, but the process of repointing and replacing bricks is quite challenging. If you are handy, a little bit of research can help you handle these repairs yourself, although they can be very risky and require a lot of time.

The thing is, if they aren’t done in the right way, the bricks and the structural foundation of your house might be damaged and sometimes even severely destroyed. This is why many homeowners opt for a professional brickwork repair. Don’t worry, even though mending stuff around the house isn’t exactly ‘your thing’, the cost of repointing a house may be less damaging to your pocket than you think. A professional mason will know which mortar to use and which bricks to repair, making sure to color-match it with the existing bricks.

    Opt for a power wash

If the beauty of your house lays in its history, then your agent will probably recommend keeping the outside in its original condition. So, what you can do is give it a good power wash, which is also known as pressure washing. This way you can remove years of grime from your bricks and restore their original color. If you go with this type of maintenance, you can power wash the pathway and the rest of the brick or concrete areas of your home. Has your outdoor furniture seen better days? Make sure you power wash it as well.

    Paint or stain the bricks

Another affordable way to transform the outside of your home is to paint the exposed bricks. It’s a great and effective way to refresh and provide an extreme makeover to any room inside the house or in its exterior. However, you should bear in mind that painting the brickwork might not always be advisable. If you live in an area that has a lot of moisture, skip the painting and go for a simple power wash, because bricks are porous and will absorb moisture from the ground. This moisture won’t be able to evaporate if the bricks are painted.

You can also choose the staining technique as another finishing option. It’s much quicker and certainly easier than painting. Besides, this process will make the bricks’ unique texture stand out, while painting does the opposite.

    Repair and maintain

As soon as you deal with the brickwork and do all the necessary repairs, invest some more time in adding a fine finishing touch to your house’s exterior. Straighten the shutters, replace any cracked windows, and give your door a fresh coat of paint. This will give your brick home additional charm and a warm, fairytale-like appearance.

Waste no time and give your house the look it deserves!

You don’t have to be a perfectionist to agree that nothing looks worse than a neglected house facade. Peeling paint or missing bricks from the front part of the exterior can make even the prettiest home look disregarded and badly maintained. Adding a few finishing touches is an easy and effective way to help you transform and accentuate the beauty of your brick home. So wait no more, your home will thank you for it!
