  • Terracotta Wall Cladding & Panels: More Than Just a Pretty Facade

Terracotta Wall Cladding & Panels: More Than Just a Pretty Facade

Are you confused about selecting the best wall cladding material? You don’t want to create a good looking facade. Instead, an exterior wall that can work as a protective shield for your building. But do you think a building with an unappealing look can attract people to it? Think about yourself, would you go? No, right?

Cladding is as essential as a core pillar of the building. Core pillars help the building stand straight for the years. While cladding makes sure it is safe from all the harsh weather conditions, be it extreme heat or excess rainfall.

Wall assembly is the group of components that fulfill the support, control and finish function, which includes exterior cladding & sheathing, interior cladding, vapor barriers, insulation, etc. Here we will see the primary and most used wall assemblies in the commercial building. And after that, we will discuss the architectural material that has won the hearts of many architectures – Terracotta Cladding.

Types of Wall Assemblies and Cladding:

There are three significant types of wall assemblies used in the commercial building’s wall. And they are as follows:

    1. Mass Walls

These are the most basic and traditional ones. The mass walls are created with the use of brick masonry, concrete and rammed earth. And these materials are also responsible for the protection. As its name suggests, the mass of the walls decides the strength and level of protection it will provide to the building.

    2. Barrier Walls

Barrier wall, the name itself suggests that it is used to create a barrier between the harsh weather conditions and indoor spaces. This type of wall has the outer material that protects the wall from water and heat. The wall consists of precast concrete panels and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). A slight defect in the wall and you will see rainwater entering the indoor spaces.

    3. Cavity Walls

The most reliable one and preferred by most builders is the cavity wall. This wall uses the concealed air space and drainage plane to resist the bulk water infiltration. If the design of a wall is done thoroughly with the proper material, then it may provide thermal protection too.

So these were the most-used and basic wall assembling. And cladding is a part of it, as said in the introduction part. After reading significant types of wall assemblies, you would have realized that the cavity wall is the modern approach towards the security of the wall from rough weather conditions.

And terracotta wall cladding is recommended by the architectures and many of them are currently using them to create an exterior that is appealing as well shielding. After hearing terracotta cladding, the first thing to click in mind is ‘pretty fancy facade,’ but here we will explain to you it is more than that.

And why is it so? Take heed to the next section to get the real reason behind it. We will start off with,

    What is Terracotta Cladding?

Before using or selecting any material, you need to know about it. Terracotta is the baked form of the earth. It is natural clay.

Now let’s talk about terracotta cladding. It is a natural and raw form of clay, heated at a higher temperature without adding any chemicals. It is a cladding material that provides both thermal insulation as well as weather resistance and gives aesthetic facade.

    Advantages of Terracotta Cladding

    1. Thermal Insulation

Because of the ventilated system, the terracotta can give better thermal insulation than any other. To enjoy thermal insulation benefits, go for the rainscreen principle while cladding. Or if the precast cladding is done with the sandwich concept.

    2. Cost-effective maintenance

Terracotta cladding requires less maintenance. A single power wash every 5 to 10 years will work for unglazed terracotta if you go for glazed one, then you can stay worry-free for at least 10 to 20 years. The surface of terracotta doesn’t let dust gather on it.

    3. Durable

Terracotta is obtained from natural and raw clay, so the strength it has is natural. Terracotta panels used in the cladding are fired at high temperatures, which makes it durable. If the installation is done properly with the help of knowledgeable labors, the building can survive upto 100 years.

    4. Sustainable

It is obvious. Terracotta is obtained from nature, but no one is harmed during the process. And its processing doesn’t harm any living being too. It is recyclable, even after years, you can reuse it for making something else.

    5. Various Designs and Colors to Select From!

The biggest advantage of terracotta is, it’s numerous options in texture and colors. You can select from the range of colors from natural to human-made in both glazed and unglazed effects, i.e., there is the availability of red, yellow, gray, brown, and white colors as well as you will get the mixture of any of this color too. Even you will get a wide variety in texture as well from smooth to rough.

    Disadvantages of Terracotta Cladding

    1. Buy from Certified Dealer

Terracotta cladding is something that needs proper processing for the perfect durability. If you want to experience and get all the benefits of terracotta cladding, make sure you buy it from the certified dealer.

    2. Requires skilled labors

Skilled laborers are required for the proper installation of terracotta cladding. A single mistake can ruin everything.

    3. High Initial Cost

The only drawback that makes people think twice about getting it. But think it as an investment, you won’t have to look at the rebuilding side after installing these. Even your repairing cost will low down too. As we said with proper installation, it can protect a building for 100 years.

Terracotta Cladding – Not a Mere Fancy Facade

The terracotta facade will do the multitasking for you, from looking appealing to protecting the exterior and interiors from damage. This is a pocket-friendly way to build a construction that will save you from maintenance costs in the long run, and most importantly, you can stay worry-free for years regarding the repair or rebuilding cost.

  • Home Necessities During A Pandemic Lockdown

Home Necessities During A Pandemic Lockdown

During this pandemic lockdown, a lot of people are panic buying a bunch of products that they may or may not need, fearing that, at some point, some supplies might run out of stock. That is exactly why some supplies are not available in some stores. Panic buying groceries and household items will prevent you from focusing on what your house actually needs, and you might end up buying a lot of things that you’ll have to throw away after a while because they expired before you even got to use them. You will also find that you are missing a lot of essential items. For that reason, we have assembled a list of all the necessities that any home will need during a pandemic lockdown.

    Home Equipment

Getting enough food for you and your family is important, but keeping your home, garden, and yard in a good condition is also important. After the lockdown, you might find your house messy with an unclean pool or garden. Of course, those who do regular maintenance to your pool and garden are not available now, so you will need to do all that work by yourself in order to avoid any hassles. You should start buying the needed equipment for your pool and garden so you can take care of them while you’re in lockdown. Start by getting the essential equipment that’s not too expensive but at the same time will keep your yard in good condition.

Another necessary piece of home equipment that’s usually overlooked is a generator. We’re all staying at home, some of us are working, studying, playing, or watching movies; and everything we do requires electricity. So, what will happen if there’s a power outage? To ensure that we always have a power supply, we have to have a backup and purchase a generator for such a situation.

There are many inexpensive generators that you can buy. You can choose between standby, portable, and inverter generators. The folks at https://www.ablesales.com.au/ say that the type of generator you get should be based on your needs, the size of your house, and how many hours you need it for. If you want a generator that works automatically once there’s a power outage, then a standby generator is your ideal option. On the other hand, if you want a small-sized generator so you can only use the necessary appliances, then a portable generator will be a good choice. You will also find some generators are powered by fuel others are by gas, and some can be powered by both. If you don’t want to stay at home with no electricity, then getting a generator is a must.

    Food

From the moment the lockdown started, people have been buying massive amounts of food they don’t need and most of it is unhealthy. When you’re shopping, you should know what you need and don’t need it. Start by making a list of everything you have and their expiry date.  After that, create another list, with the things you need and only buy enough for one or two weeks.

Since we’re doing everything from home, even working, snacks have become a must-have in every house. This can have adverse effects on our health. Try reducing the snacks you buy and replace them with healthy food, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, or low-carb biscuits. Also get food that is rich in vitamin C, such as yellow, red, and green pepper, broccoli, kiwi, orange, sweet potato, and strawberries. Try searching for new and fun ways to cook these ingredients so you don’t get bored.

    Water

While you’re shopping, don’t forget to get enough, but not too much, water for you and your family members. In this lockdown, it’s preferable to store one gallon of water per person for each day and have a week’s supply at your home.

    Medicine

If you’re suffering from any chronic health conditions, it’s better to get a one-month supply of your medicine. If you don’t have any long-term illness, then only make sure that your home has the needed medicines and that your first-aid kit supplies are in good condition. Ensure that none of your medicine or first aid kit equipment is expired or damaged to ensure that you can treat common injuries at home. If you don’t own a first-aid kit, you should buy one. The kit should include badges, scissors, antibiotic, and tweezers.

    Household Items

While some people are panic buying toilet papers, hand soaps, and hand sanitizers, there are few things they usually forget such as toothpaste, toothbrush, dish soap, dental floss, reusable plastic bags, and home cleaning products. You should have 2-week stock of these items to ensure that your home has everything you need.

    Workout Equipment

During this pandemic lockdown, you should take care of your physical and mental health. Exercise will boost your immune system, improve your body, and your mental health. If you don’t usually work out and you don’t have the right equipment for it, then it’s time you purchase them. Start by watching workout videos online to know what you’ll need. Basic workout equipment such as mats, resistance bands, and dumbbells are a must-have. There are a lot of other things that you can buy, but you might not need all of them, especially if you exercise daily. Get the essentials and once you feel that you passed the beginners’ level, you can start purchasing new equipment.

Many individuals have realized that they’re not prepared for a pandemic lockdown. So many of us unsure about which items we should get, and that’s totally normal. Since we don’t know how long this lockdown could last, it’s important to know how to properly prepare for it. The necessities will vary from one person to another and if you are living with your family, you should consider their needs while you’re shopping. Let everyone you’re living with write down the things they need or want and get a 2-week supply of the essential things and a 1-week stock of the less important things. That way, your house will be stocked with everything you need and nothing will expire.

  • 9 Commercial Construction Trends that You Should Know

9 Commercial Construction Trends that You Should Know

The trends in the commercial construction industry keep on changing like other industries. Keeping yourself aware is crucial if you want to survive and thrive in the construction industry. Knowledge about these trends is of immense importance for both investors and construction contractors.

Right now, the economic climate is shifting with the change in the global climate. The commercial construction industry is adjusting to these new trends. We’ve made a list of 9 construction trends that you need to know.

You should pay attention to these trends before starting your new Commercial Construction project. These will help you diversify and modernize your construction design and approach.

    1. Smart Buildings

This goes without saying as the construction industry has always been the first to incorporate smart technology. Smart technology systems such as data monitoring and remote are already in use. With the emergence and progress of technology, the demand for smart buildings is increasing at a much faster rate.

    2. Going Green

People and companies are paying more attention to the climate change factor. Residential buildings and commercial infrastructures all have adapted and embraced the ‘go-green’ culture. It has evolved from a movement to standard that you should try to follow.

Renewable energy is in trend and will continue to engage companies and people. Geothermal energy is another trend that is on the rise due to its cost-effective benefits. So, you must look out for viable solutions and introduce such a system in new buildings.

    3. Off-Site Construction

We’ve seen the rise of modular and prefabricated construction in some areas. This is a trend that is going to spread across the globe. Offsite construction not only saves time but money also which makes it an appropriate construction approach.

The big construction companies are going to adapt this trend sooner as it is cost saving. It is easy for them to prefabricate building components at an offsite and then use them onsite.

    4. Commercial Entertainment Zones

Another recent trend that is getting popularity is the development of commercial entertainment zones.  Both tenants and commercial developers fueling the trend of entertainment zones. In this way, businesses are complementing each other without competing with each other. This new trend has added a new touch to the commercial construction industry.

This modern trend is going to spread as more and more developers are embracing it. And we can say without any doubt that this is going to very successful.

    5. Remodeling and Adaptation

Retrofitting is a cost-effective approach and many businesses find it an easy solution to get things done. Adapting current developments and remodeling the existing ones is now a growing trend in the commercial construction industry. Many leading commercial companies are adapting existing buildings instead of new developments.

    6. Quality Senior Housing

With the rise in average life expectancy, the senior housing sector is booming. New senior communities are developing rapidly, especially in suburban areas. If we keep this in mind, commercial developments have to complement the needs of these senior citizens.

Also, established commercial and residential buildings will require remodeling. The remodeling may be small, whereas some buildings will require full-scale renovations.

    7. Shortage of Skilled Labor

The recessions and bad economic conditions are forcing skilled labor out of work. We’ve seen in the past that once left, only a few people return back to their old professions. And the same is expected to happen as people tend to find secure ways of earning a livelihood.

The construction industry has always been the sector neglected by the tech-minded young people. So, we can say that the shortage is there to stay for a long period. Also, the decrease in immigration will further complicate this issue.

    8. Building Information Modeling

In commercial construction, Building Information Modeling or BIM is becoming a go-to for designing. BIM not only provide the simulation but also help in the automation process. In a way, it speeds up the execution by offering the right simulation before the construction process begins.

    9. Laser Scanning Technology

We already have discussed the emerging trend of smart technology in the construction industry. The 3-D laser scanning technology is the next adaptation to this industry. These scanners provide better visualization of positions and dimensions to produce digital reproductions.

Right now, only a handful of companies are using 3D laser scanners to create digital reproductions. However, this trend is expected to grow across the industry as 3-D printing offers the next logical progression.

    Bottom Line

New trends are shaping the commercial construction industry in big ways. In order to keep up with these trends, the contractors have to adapt to these changes. You should understand these trends and utilize them in the forthcoming projects.

  • What is Architectural Conservation?

    What is Architectural Conservation?

Architectural conservation is a field which is important to society because it embraces the preservation of historical objects deemed to be significant to the cultural heritage of a society. If there were no architectural conservation movement, a great many outstanding objects from the past would literally waste away because they were exposed to the elements, and allowed to deteriorate.

People involved with architectural conservation are generally extremely well trained in all the modern methods which are used to preserve the integrity of artworks, and in some cases to help restore them to their original condition, or something very close to it. In this way, pieces of historical significance can be preserved and passed on for the enjoyment of modern-day citizens, as well as many more in the future.

    What is Architectural Conservation?

Architectural conservation is a process wherein objects of cultural significance are maintained and prevented from being damaged through carefully planned projects which are designed to either conserve or restore them. It often takes the efforts of an entire team of individuals who are familiar with the objects to be worked upon, and this team will collectively decide on the best course of action for an individual piece.

Usually that decision is based on artistic as well as contextual values, and in some cases, it might even be decided that no intervention at all is the best course of action. In reaching a decision on a course of action, the conservation architect and the entire team will generally consider all those issues which are pertinent to prolonging the life and preserving the character of an object.

Factors which come into play are the form and style of the piece, the materials it has been produced from, and how they would react to intervention, and how modern methods can be applied to preservation of the piece. In a broader sense, architectural conservation refers to societal policy for identifying and assigning value to cultural resources having historical significance.

At times, it may even take in the need to create laws or regulations which will protect historical treasures, and to produce policies or plans of management so these objects can be protected indefinitely, and so the public can be educated about them. Architectural conservation professionals serve a very valuable and useful role in society by helping to conserve treasures of the past, so that individuals in the present and the future can continue to appreciate them.

    Why is it Important?

The biggest reason why architectural conservation is significant in today’s world is that it provides the best method for retaining the heritage and history of a culture, and without it, much of that heritage and history would be lost to the ravages of time. In a sense, it is an environmental issue, since it reduces the requirement for new materials, and in the case of buildings, it also lowers or eliminates the cost of demolition.

In such cases, it is far more practical to make slight modifications to building materials and structural design so that a building can meet modern codes and standards, rather than to tear it down entirely. In addition to retaining historic value in a given object, conservation also increases the economic value of that object. Environmentally speaking, it allows for the reuse of infrastructure rather than the implementation of all new infrastructure which could be costly and very time-consuming.

This results in an all-around savings in the areas of material, money, and energy, so architectural conservation has a definite environmental aspect to it. There are four general reasons why architectural converse conservation is so important to society. The first of these is that it preserves objects of significance by repairing existing components of that object as needed.

Secondly, whenever any alterations or additions are necessary for its rehabilitation, these can be carefully planned and implemented. When necessary, a program of restoration can be undertaken, so that objects can be brought to a state close to their original condition. Finally, the last major reason why architectural conservation is so important in modern society is that it will also provide a vehicle for complete reconstruction.

Sometimes that is deemed to be the most appropriate course of action for continuing an object of significance. In 1996, the US Congress recognized the importance of conservation practices, and passed the National Historic Preservation Act which declared its intention to support the idea of conservation as a critical component to national heritage.

What is the Difference between Conservation and Restoration?

You may have heard the two terms restoration and conservation used interchangeably in artistic circles. However, there is a slight difference between the two practices, and the difference lies in their two different approaches to preserving objects of historical significance. Conservation seeks to apply techniques which will document and stabilize a piece of artwork, so as to prevent any further deterioration of it, and to help resist ongoing damage which might be done.

Any methods undertaken in conservation will be planned so that they don’t interfere with the nature of the object’s construction materials, and will not interfere with any future interventions which might be deemed necessary. Art restoration on the other hand, can be thought of as a more invasive process, and it seeks to restore an object to something close to its original condition. This will often cause historical markers of object usage to be removed entirely, and it’s quite possible that original materials might be altered or replaced in the process of restoration.
