What Passes Through Your Windows?
Homeowners know that letting the glare of the sun into a home can boost the heat index indoors as well as cause interior damage and fading. That’s why more people are opting to replace their ordinary glass windows with glazed windows.

Window glazing allows us clear views of the outdoors even as it absorbs, transmits and reradiates light and heat. Glazing doesn’t solve all problems with the sun’s glare and heat, but if you select the right glazing, there are many advantages that you can enjoy. Visible light is just one example. Visible light is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see – and it is what brightens up every room in a home.

In energy-efficient windows, measuring the window’s capacity for visible light is expressed as VT, or visible transmittance. The higher the VT, the more visible light.

Even with glazing, windows will still admit ultraviolet and infrared light. Glazing does a lot, however, to mitigate the sun’s potential damage to your home. Ultraviolet light is the part of the spectrum between visible light and X-ray. Our eyes cannot see it, but we can certainly see the negative effects of too much exposure to it. Ultraviolet light makes interior accessories, such as fabric and wallpaper, fade. Infrared light, on the other hand, begins at wavelengths of 780 nanometers. Also known as heat energy, it is the energy that we feel when we feel the warmth of the sun on our skin.

Low-emissivity (Low-E) glazing is engineered to limit the absorption of ultraviolet and infrared light without limiting the transmission of visible light. It features a microscopic metallic coating that functions much like the silver lining in a thermos, by reflecting the temperature of the room inside.

There are also some things that do not directly pass through the glazing but still impact the energy performance of the window. Air leaks around the windows, for instance, lessen your window’s ability to retain heat or cold. The wrong window frames can cause you to lose or gain heat or cold too. Metal frames with no thermal breakers are especially conductive.

So what can you do?
- Choose better glazing material. There are various options available on the market today, ranging from clear to etched glass. We recommend double-pane windows instead of the traditional single-pane window if you wish to maximize energy savings.
- Choose according to your climate. Energy-efficient windows bear labels from the National Fenestration Rating Council and ENERGY STAR® that indicate the unit’s energy capacities. Some values – such as a high SHGC – are good in cold climates, but won’t work as well for homes in warm climates where there’s a need for cooling rather than heating. When considering what kind of glazing and window frames to get for your home, always take into account the climate and typical weather conditions where you live.
- Position your windows properly. North-facing windows will need little shading. If you must orient your windows south, east or west, make sure that you have ample shading devices whenever necessary. Overhanging tree branches that may get in the way of daylighting should be pruned back.

Another way shingle roofs get deformed is through is bending or curling, caused by the uneven expansion or contraction of a shingle’s top and bottom layers because of temperature changes. Once a shingle is bent or curled up, it forms gaps between it and the adjacent shingles, letting water pass through.

Your flashing is out of place

Damaged flashing is highly problematic because it acts as a protective barrier around edges, ridges, and valleys – all parts of the roof where water tends to flow along. However, tracking down flashing damage can be more difficult than spotting defective shingles which is why the job is mostly left to professionals. Fortunately, once the problem is spotted, repairing flashing can be as easy as re-applying sealant, if the damage is mild enough. More severe flashing damage will most likely require total replacement though.

How to Maximize Window Lifespan

One of the things that you should never overlook when it comes to home maintenance is your windows. Constant maintenance and proper upkeep are essential to keeping your windows in good condition for years, allowing you to maximize their lifespan and your investment. Inspection

Thoroughly inspect every window in your home at the start of each season. Check the condition of the window frame and sash, and look for any signs of rot, which could indicate moisture infiltration.

Look for signs of moisture in double- or triple-paned windows as well. This may be a sign that the seal already needs to be replaced. A compromised seal will significantly affect the performance of your windows.

Cleaning

Window cleaning should not be very difficult – although it can, admittedly, be tedious. Wooden windows should be wiped down regularly with a clean damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Avoid using too much water, as too much moisture can lead to rot. Meanwhile, vinyl and aluminum windows can be cleaned using a mild detergent and a soft scrubbing brush. Use a mild glass cleaner to keep the glazing sparkly clean.

When cleaning your windows, do not forget about the casing and adjacent areas to help reduce the likelihood of dirt buildup.

Sealing and caulking

Improperly sealed gaps around your window can let unnecessary cold air in or warmth out, reducing the window’s performance and your home’s energy efficiency. Upon inspection and discovery of compromised sealing, replace all worn out rubber seals. You can also use spray-form insulation. Caulking the gaps can also help seal the windows more efficiently.

Repainting

Wooden and metal window frames are best repainted every three or four years. This will help protect them from the weather while maintaining their nice appearance. Always make it a point to thoroughly clean the window before painting. Additionally, be careful not to paint over moving parts to keep the window from getting stuck.

Weatherproofing

Weatherproofing your windows when the weather begins to get wet and cold can help you dodge the bad effects of moisture which, if left untended, can later cause rot and rust. To weatherproof, you can simply use clear plastic window covers to insulate. They are pretty easy to install and you can put them up either outside or inside the window.

If you choose to weatherproof outside, you can nail the cover over the window. This will create a dead air insulating space. Meanwhile, to weatherproof from the inside, you can tape down the cover to the window’s edges. Use a blow dryer to shrink and seal the plastic over the window.

Repairing and replacing damaged parts

Once you notice holes, splinters, cracks, and any signs of damage in any of your window’s parts, attend to them immediately. The longer you delay taking action, the more serious the issues will get, and the faster your windows will deteriorate.
