  • Want a Strong Company Culture? Embrace Art

Want a Strong Company Culture? Embrace Art

Office design plays a bigger role in company culture than most entrepreneurs want to admit. It’s commonly accepted that company culture is worth investing in (culture matters to employees, and money saved on recruitment is money earned). But how do you promote a nebulous concept like culture? Writing it into a handbook doesn’t make it real.

Often times, hiring a good design agency is the first step. Whatever the mission statement might say, the fact is that employees walk into a physical building every day. The physical properties of the space have a tremendous impact on how people experience their daily lives. We’ve seen how office design affects work styles for startups, but how does it affect mentality and happiness?

    Embrace-Art

As a designer, one of the most effective tools at your disposal is art. Here are a few ways in which you can bring creativity into the office environment to make your clients happy.

    1) Make the most of paintings, posters, and sculptures

If you’re working with a tech company, chances are that any creativity they show is executed through the computer. Whether it’s marketing, design, or code, tech startup creativity revolves around the digital world.

When your eyes are on the computer screen all day, it’s refreshing to have inspiring surroundings to look at when you get up. Designers can spice things up by installing physical art wherever possible.

For a small startup with an equally small office, wall hangings are the place to start. They come in a variety of materials; canvas can provide a nice, textured alternative to the paper posters and fliers we see too much of in advertising.

For bigger companies, it pays to get creative. Big projects like sculptures for the courtyard are the best way to make every employee realize that they’re working somewhere special. Needless to say, the best (and most expensive) parts of the project should be reserved for common areas, rather than gated away in executive meeting rooms. One of the reasons businesses want a strong culture in the first place is to make sure that today’s interns will want to become tomorrow’s executives.

    2) Put murals where you least expect them

Murals are a powerful tool when they’re used right. Unlike paintings, sculptures, and other forms of traditional art, murals and decals can be painted onto any wall, anywhere. No need for prominent displays and ample spacing.

    Embrace-Art-1

If the office has a high-traffic hall that doesn’t offer much to look at, take a walk down it yourself and see where your eyes are naturally drawn. If there’s any kind of flat surface in your line of vision, you can paint a mural or stick a decal on it. Awkward sizes and viewing distances aren’t a big deal because you can tailor the drawing to the space.

Better yet, murals take well to text-based designs. Sometimes, sticking up few simple words related to the company’s mission or product is all takes to inject life into a drab corridor.

    3) Employees can make their own art – encourage decentralization

In Fast Company‘s profile of innovative corporate headquarters, we see that Facebook’s campus goes through tiny changes every day. You might find a sign or a poster mysteriously hanging in a hallway, or maybe an office manager decided the weekend before to change the color of the mugs in the kitchen.

Giving individual employees the freedom and power to affect the physical office space is as important as empowering them to affect the office culture. Ideally, one would lead to the other. By encouraging decentralized creativity, you give employees a sense of ownership and responsibility.

As a designer, it’s difficult to encourage this behavior directly, but you can provide the tools that make it possible. Creative blank slates like whiteboards, toy blocks, and cork boards give employees a chance to express themselves. More importantly, they increase the odds of coming into the office every day and seeing something new.

    Embrace-Art-2

If you’re lacking inspiration, platforms like Share Your Office offer a convenient look into popular shared offices and coworking spaces. In the end, however, it’s not an office designer’s job to define or build company culture. You’ll have to depend on management to take what you offer and develop it.

At the same time, you’ll have a happier client and a cooler project in your portfolio if you keep in mind how employees will actually engage with the space. Office design is not a standalone work of art; it’s dynamic. Embrace this dynamism in your work, and you’ll make a real difference in every employee’s life.

  • 3 Signs You Have a Rodent Infestation

3 Signs You Have a Rodent Infestation

From the common house mouse to larger rats of all shapes and sizes, there are many species of rodents that could invade your home. While infestations are more common in the winter when these mammals seek a warm place to nest, they may enter your home year round and for a number of reasons. Usually, by the time you see a mouse or rat in or around the perimeter of your home, chances are they have already found their way inside. If you believe you are facing a rodent infestation, here are three signs to look for that may help you discover if these pests have moved in with you.

3 Signs You Have a Rodent Infestation

    Your Pets Become Restless

If you have a dog or cat that was previously calm and has recently begun to pace, sniff at the walls or otherwise become restless, it may be because they can smell the pests that have entered your home and possibly even hear them in the walls. If your pets frequently return to the same areas of your home and seem to growl or whine for no reason, you may want to consider having your home inspected for mice or rats. Do not let your pets hunt or kill rodents, as they can carry diseases that may infect them or inflict dangerous bites, especially in the case of larger rats.

New Odors Appear in the Home

No matter if you are dealing with mice or rats, most species of rodents urinate and defecate a great deal, so much so that you may notice new unpleasant odors where they nest. Larger male rodents exude a musky odor that may become noticeable when new colonies start to build in your attic or basement. Rodents also carry a greasy type of oil in their fur that they leave behind on baseboards or walls when they squeeze through, and you may notice this odor as well. This grease may leave stains behind on your home’s paint, so you may catch a whiff of the smell and see the smudges at the same time.

    Shredded Material in the Attic

Even if you do not know the difference between rats and mice, the way they nest is extremely similar. In order to build a nest, they chew up cardboard, insulation, furniture cushions and paper and stuff the shreds into small holes, boxes or other hidey holes to make a warm, safe home for their pups. This is why rodents are most commonly found in the attic, as there is usually a jumble of nesting material available to them. If you store furniture or boxes or old clothing in your attic’s home, wrap them tightly in heavy-duty plastic and store smaller items in plastic storage boxes with snap-on lids so that rodents do not have access to them. This is one of the most effective ways to protect your home from a mice or rodent infestation.

    Be Vigilant

Because species of mice and rats can be found virtually anywhere, prevention is key to keeping rodents away from your home. Do not give them the opportunity to nest, and plug up areas where they might enter your home. Keep all food, including pet food, in air-tight containers.

The more you know about the behaviors of mice and rats, the better you will be able to identify their presence and take the proper steps to have them professionally eliminated.

  • Guide to the Ultimate Home Radiator Performance

Guide to the Ultimate Home Radiator Performance

When it comes to maintaining your home technology, there is one system that requires more care than any other – the radiator.  Modern radiators offer a green technology that makes them one of the most advanced systems for use in any contemporary home. However, if left unchecked the full potential of this advanced technology will fail to be achieved. Here are several of the most vital things to remember for radiator maintenance.

    Home radiator

    The Benefits of Eco Radiators

Before you do anything, it’s necessary to be sure which style of radiator you want to include in your home. Traditional night storage heaters are a thing of the past now. We are no living in an era where those old energy guzzling machines are relevant to contemporary living. Modern eco-friendly radiators are an excellent alternative that are not only cheaper to buy, but guarantee a healthier performance that does not release trace amounts of carbon into the atmosphere like old storage heaters do.

A common misconception about green radiators is that they are expensive. This is untrue. They are actually among the most financially sound investments for a modern home, as they last for years and increase the value of a property thanks to the sought-after technology they utilise.

The installation process is also very straightforward and takes only a day or two to complete. Modern systems also offer trendy slimline designs with all the benefits of storage heaters, only without negative usage. These small, silent systems fit snugly into the décor of any modern home and come in a range of colours to complement their surroundings.

    Bleeding your radiators

Okay, now that you’ve decided on your radiator, the question is how do you maintain it regularly? Bleeding a radiator is one of the most important maintenance tasks needed on a regular basis.

The process of bleeding is necessary to prevent air from getting trapped within the system which, if not cleared, will affect the performance of the system by stopping heat being released. Air enters our central heating systems whenever fresh water flows through the boiler and heating systems. This small amount of air is collected at the top of the radiator where warm water cannot gather to allow the necessary function of heating.

You will realise when your radiator needs to be bled as you’ll notice the radiator is not warm to the touch with areas of cold being prevalent throughout, especially near the top. In more extreme cases the radiator will not be warm at all. You should check your radiators at least once a week when they are turned on just to assess the temperature is sufficient. Too often a change is only noticed when the house begins to feel cold even though the heating is on.

Bleeding the system is an easy process. First turn the heating off so there’s no chance of burning your hands, then insert a bleeding key or similar tool into the valve on the top of the radiator and proceed to turn it anti-clockwise so that the air is gently released. You will hear it gradually dispersing.

Be sure to place a towel or cloth on the floor underneath the valve to catch the few drops water that will inevitably leak out. Once the air has escaped, quickly close the valve again to avoid large amounts of water pouring out. Finally turn your heating on to check that the system is now working efficiently.

    Flushing your radiators

If you are still having problems with your radiator even after bleeding, there may be a need to flush through the system. This is a familiar issue with all electric Heaters that UK heating professionals are required to assist with. Flushing involves performing a complete clean of the radiator interior to remove any interior residue that has built up inside the system over time and is thus preventing the radiator from reaching its full capacity as a result.

Although this can be a costly endeavour, it is vital for making sure your system is operating as it should be. In some cases flushing can also determine whether the issue may require new heating systems to be installed; a case most likely to occur in older radiators.

In order to keep your radiators from needing to be flushed, it’s a good idea to use a cleaning system such as a popular magnetic filter like magnaclean.

    Positioning radiators around your home

Radiators heat rooms via two forms of heating: radiation and convection. Radiation is the heat that comes off the radiator itself, and convection is when the radiator heats the air in the room surrounding it. In order to assist this heating it’s best to allow plenty of physical space in your room around the radiator. All furniture should be at least six inches away as it will absorb the heat if positioned too close, resulting in heat being prevented from reaching the rest of the home.

The most common place for British properties to situate a radiator is against an external wall under a window as they are usually the coldest area of a room and thus benefit from hat the most.

Do not keep curtains in a position so that they block the radiator’s heat release and cause it to connect with the exterior window and walls. If you are concerned about the effect that your curtains may have on blocking heat, using a reflective material such as Radflek on your radiator can significantly reduce this. To make sure your heat is further distributed evenly it is also useful to install a radiator fan.

Whether you plan to install new radiators or not, make sure you check the performance of your systems regularly.

  • 7 Bathroom Remodeling Tips from the Pros

7 Bathroom Remodeling Tips from the Pros

No matter the size of your bathroom, a remodel can be costly, but not unwarranted. After all, we’re in the bathroom every single day of our lives. Whether we’re taking our morning shower, getting ready for a date or trying to get some peace and quiet from the kiddos, the bathroom is as our place of refuge. So why not revamp it with some style?

Here are seven ways to renovate your bathroom.

    Bathroom Designs

Work with the Space You Have

One of the first mistakes we make when we decide to remodel our bathroom is setting the bar too high, and I’m not talking about the curtain rod – ba dum dum, tstch. As a DIY-er, knocking down the walls and and ripping out the plumbing sounds all well and good until you actually have to do it. Plumbing is not for the faint of heart; it requires a professional. After connecting that sledgehammer with the wall, you’ll be quick to realize this.

Past president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), Cameron Snyder says that “[the bathroom] is a less efficient room to renovate than others in the house because it’s so tight. There is less economy of scale, and timing becomes critical. You don’t want days to go by between the plumber leaving and the electrician showing up.”

The great thing about a bathroom remodel is that you aren’t required to pull out the plumbing and start from scratch. All you have to do is work with what you have. There are ways to update your bathroom without having to call in a plumber or electrician.

Have All Your Materials on Hand

Remember that old expression, “All good things come to those who wait?” This is true of that new accent mirror and Italian-made tile you ordered for the bath remodel, too. Special orders take time to customize, and delivery services aren’t always reliable. It’s totally understandable to want to begin your bathroom renovation project as soon as you can, but without the right accessories and equipment, you could be waiting weeks before you’re even able to use the bathroom again. Another bonus of waiting until all of your tools, fitments and fixtures are on hand is knowing whether you’ll need more help with your project before making any irreparable changes.

Keep the Space Clean with Organization

A cluttered bathroom is a messy bathroom. No matter how often you scrub the counters, tub and floors, if the bathroom is always in disarray, it’ll always feel dirty. As you set out to revamp your bathroom, allocate space for your toiletries. Built-in shelving, cabinets and storage ladders create a dynamic sense of space and allow you to play with towel display and color schemes.

You Can Never Go Wrong with Tile

Designer Charlotte Moss has said that “People’s lives are expressed in little details…The soap in the bathroom, the flowers in the garden, the books on the bedside table are all strong symbols of a life in progress. You look at these details and a world unfolds—here are their books, the paintings they cherish, the music that soothes their souls.” It’s the details that make up the larger part of life, and without them life would be pretty boring. Tile is no different.

HGTV recommends that renovators use porcelain tile when upgrading bathroom floors. Unlike ceramic tile, porcelain tile is a harder and denser material. Because it’s also more porous, porcelain tile is better for stain resistance and slippage. It’s no fun getting out of the shower nice and clean only to slip and land hard on your backside. Another awesome feature of porcelain tile is that it can simulate natural stone like limestone and granite. Not to mention, a tile floor is an easy clean up!

    Lighting Makes All the Difference

What good is renovating your bathroom without the right kind of lighting? Light can dress up or dress down a space. If you want your bathroom to be a tranquil space for introspection and relaxation, you need a lighting system that will help you to accomplish just that. But before deciding on a design, you’ll want to avoid any type of lighting fixture with a canvas shade or ornate design. A canvas shade will hold in moisture and eventually begin to mold. While a highly ornamented fixture will be tough to clean – if the crevices are always dusty and you can’t get in there to give them a proper cleaning, your bathroom will always feel unclean.

There are a number of ways to go with a lighting fixture. Whether you decide to use a wall sconce for mood lighting, a pendant for overhead light or flush mount lighting (the most popular choice in bathroom lighting design) for down lighting, the fixture will set the pace of the space.

    It’s All About that Rod

We’re all familiar with the straight shower rod. But when you replace the straight rod with a curved rod, you are saving yourself a lot of space in the shower. Have you ever been annoyed by the shower curtain sticking to your legs as you try to bathe? With a curved shower rod, you won’t have to worry about again. Not only that, but the curved model contemporizes your bathroom. Now your bathroom is as fashionable as it is functional.

A Mirror is the Bathroom’s Statement Piece

Once you’ve decided on the lighting, the next step is to pick a mirror. Since the invention of indoor plumbing, it’s been customary to equip the bathroom with a vanity. While the vanity is a tried-and-true piece of bathroom furniture, it has become a little dated. One way to update your space is to replace the vanity with a large, streamlined mirror. A large mirror will reflect light and open the space, while its streamlined design will complement the cut of the tile.

As you embark on your renovating journey, keep these tips in mind; it’ll make the job a whole lot easier.

  • Essay: Architecture vs Interior Design

    Essay: Architecture vs Interior Design

What is the actual difference between architecture and interior design? Many people feel that this difference exists, however they cannot express it with their own words. When people think about home renovation, there is a paramount question whom to hire – an architect or an interior designer. Both experts are responsible for beautifying and building. They can make your home look elegant and classy or extravagant and unusual. Everything depends on your preferences. Thus, it is considerable to grasp this slight difference between architecture and interior design.

    futuristic-white-freeze-exterior-design

Foremost, let us figure out what architecture is. Architecture is related to projecting, planning and construction of buildings. Every building has been built due to the hard work of architectures. Nonetheless, not every building has been built with the help of a designer. When you look at the rough and unattractive factories, warehouses, dormitories, you will not find the slightest influence of a designer. These buildings serve for practical application and nothing else. They do not need to be admirable or alluring. They serve as space or room for equipment, resources, etc. For that reason, we can say that the chief responsibility of an architect is the creation of the functional and safe built environment and space.

    Futuristic-Architecture-by-Zaha-Hadid

Definitely, the role of an architect cannot be questioned, inasmuch as human life and health depend on him. A smart architect has to make the right project of a building. He should think about its safety, functionality and exterior aesthetics. Pay attention to the remarkable and genuine cathedrals, city halls and other noteworthy administrative buildings. They impress and seize our attention with the splendid sculptures, domes, shapes and sharp architectural decisions. Due to their mathematical and logical thinking, architects manage to plan the right forms, angles and lines that can ensure a building’s stability, safety and solidity. They have to choose the right materials for construction in order to improve the quality of the entire building. In brief, the main duty of an architect is to provide exterior and interior designers with the reliable, functional and solid built environment for the further decorative improvement.

    world_trade_center_transportation_hub

The work of an interior designer depends on the space organized by an architect. It is right to state that interior design is an extremely hard job. It requires knowledge about projecting, planning, building, decorating, etc. What is more, designers have to develop their personal taste and sense of aesthetics. Creativity and taste are two vital components of this job. Sometimes, logical thinking can ruin the total internal image of a building. In case of interior design, one should rely on intuition and his well-trained good taste. On the other hand, a professional interior designer cannot survive without logical thinking and accurate calculations. He has to make functional and beautiful space for living, work or entertainment. Very often, the built environment is very narrow and one has to invent something radical and uncommon to organize this space in the best way.

    Modern-Pendant-Lighting-Ideas

Being an interior designer is a challenge whereas he has to be multitasking and open-minded. Every client has different taste and preferences regarding the design of his home or office. An interior designer is expected to be good at different styles and decorative approaches. He should be able to decorate a flat, hospital, office building, etc. meeting the requirements of his clients even though he does not like their choice. Although you prefer designing restrained and discreet classy private offices, it does not mean that you cannot organize a contemporary, trendy and colorful kitchen for a young client. Interior design is associated with the improvement of space with the help of fabrics, paint, wallpapers, pictures, furniture, home appliances, lining materials, etc. These elements should coexist with one another and improve the general atmosphere of the chosen room, office or hall.

    interior-designs-concepts

Architecture and interior design are closely connected with each other. Architecture focuses on the exterior design and constitution of the whole building. It is responsible for safety, solidity and functionality of the chosen space. Architects project central heating, electricity and water supply of a building while interior designers improve this space with color, additional facing materials, fabrics and furniture making it comfortable and satisfactory for living or work.

  • HOW TO MAKE SMALL BATHROOM LOOK BIGGER?

HOW TO MAKE SMALL BATHROOM LOOK BIGGER?

People who live in standard apartments are well aware how little of space was spared for bathrooms. They can feel lucky if bathtub, sink and toilet bowl fits it. But how to extend this small area of the house without demolishing walls?

    designlikecom-batroom

Bright cold colors reflect light, thus visual increasing the space. The effect will be greater if not only the walls but the floor will be the same color, only a few shades lighter or darker. In order to avoid the bathroom looking too “pale” bring a bit of a color with a few bright accents. Suppose – colorful towels. Also, don’t procrastinate and spend a bit of time learning how to choose right colors for your particular bathroom.

Bellow you will find a few other tips how you can decorate your bathroom and make it look a lot bigger.

    Vertical patterns and mirrors tricks

The ceiling will look higher if you replace large paintings on the walls with the vertical patterns. In fact, all large details on the walls reduce the space, and this is what you suppose to avoid.

Nothing can expand the area more than mirrors and mirror surfaces. Hang a large mirror or several smaller mirrors above the bath or sink. The mirrors, especially if hung facing each other, create the impression of infinite space. You can also hang a mirror over the entire bathroom door area and create a very original and contemporary décor.

    designlikecom-batroom-white

    Nothing unnecessary

Take advantage of all the four corners of the room and purchase space saving corner shelves and cabinets (Kohl’s has something to offer like that, and these coupons might help you to afford all that too). The perfect shape, in this case, is all L-shaped shelves, which will be super handy in all small areas.

However, do not clutter the bathroom with unnecessary items: bottles, boxes, and similar items. Leave only the ones you use on a daily basis and hide less frequently used items into closed “repositories”.

    Prudently arranged shelves

Hang some open shelves on the wall. Open shelf swallows less space than a closed cabinet on the floor or at the eye level. Put small items in colorful boxes and lay them on the shelves. Voila – you saved space and now it all looks great.

Space under the sink or above the toilet is also often unfairly overlooked. Install small cabinets there as well. You will have a place where you can store sponges, toilet paper rolls or toothpaste boxes.

Do not forget to use the door – install a few hooks there for towels or bathrobes. Mini racks can be installed on the cabinet door too.

    designlikecom-batroom-red

    More light

The better-lit bathroom, the larger it appears. The conventional lighting from above can be improved with light sources above the sink or the mirror. The more glass and mirror surfaces in the bathroom will be the more beautiful light will shine.

When you are thinking on how to decorate a bathroom, think about comfort and practicality at the very first. Do not be afraid to experiment and to think unconventionally! You might end up with a gorgeous bathroom you won’t want to leave!

  • Tech Your Home to a Whole New Level

Tech Your Home to a Whole New Level

Modern interior design is more than knowing which colours are on-trend and what furniture to place where; it is about convenience and style, and integrating everything from online gaming to remote controlled heating. The advances in domestic technology have led to exquisitely designed concepts becoming a reality, created to be both aesthetically appealing and to make life much simpler for the modern home-owner. With this in mind we focus on items which will take your home entertainment to a delightful new level whilst also being fantastic to look at!

    living

Every room is a leisure room

Home entertainment is always evolving and with so many people relying on computer games, online casino apps, and film downloads to fill their domestic down-time, it is small wonder that companies are clamouring to be the ones to supply the best technology on which they can be enjoyed. For example, although smartphones are evidently designed for use anywhere and everywhere, many people choose to enjoy online gaming at home using their phones, rather than a PC, and phone companies are fully aware of the need to ensure their phones are up to the task.

    Blackjack-table-board

Being able to enjoy your home to the fullest extent has always been a goal for most, and one recent device that allows you to amply change the way you enjoy your own company is the chromecast. It will allow you to stream online shows and various entertainment to your TV, while operating it neatly from your laptop or smartphone. If you’d rather transform your living room to a casino for the night, this is also possible. Playing a few games of poker or blackjack, also known as twenty-one, as provided by online companies like the Canadian Lucky Nugget Casino, will take on new forms entirely. At the heart of both these transformative endeavors is the smartphone, and we would recommend you invest in a phone like the Galaxy 7 Edge. This fantastic mobile has many incredible qualities, including extensive removable storage and the added bonus of being water resistant up to a depth of 1.5 ft: perfect for those who enjoy a relaxing game of roulette in the bath!

    Wiimote-Hands

One room that has traditionally been reserved to the car, or for handy work or practical projects is the garage. However, to reshape the old and little used room into a space of enjoyment and entertainment does not take as much effort as one might think. Doing light renovations (getting some spotlights installed, a tv, and smoothening the floor) might turn a room most people shy from, into the room for the kids to enjoy playing wii sports without fear of knocking down a vase or two.

    The transparent television

As the name suggests, some sort of scientific wizardry allows the screen to be completely see-through when it is not in use. Panasonic’s gesture-operated transparent television was unveiled with the unreserved flourish it deserved at a the CES 2016 event in Las Vegas. An impressive demonstration showed how with one simple hand motion the screen became transparent, revealing the objects that had been placed behind it. Yet this is not the T.V.’s most remarkable feature and it was further demonstrated how half the screen can remain transparent while the other half can continue to stream television programmes. What’s the point, you may ask? This versatile piece of technology is geared towards those who are looking for less intrusive aspects to add to their home and by having a television that does not obscure feature walls, bookcases, or other items of furniture, it satisfies this need. It is also pretty darn cool!

If all this talk of home technology has piqued your interest, why not take a look at more of the technological brilliance showcased at CES 2016 in Vegas which includes virtual reality headsets that can be used for online gaming, and many other fantastic ideas for your home?
