Painting your walls a bright colour might feel like a commitment most people are not ready to make.  However, it doesn’t have to be one. The trick is to keep the rest of the furnishing neutral colours keeping it simple and clutter free.

Accessories are a very simple, cost-effective way of adding a dash of colour to your home. Venture out of your comfort zone with some Moroccan inspired brightly coloured cushions for your living room or maybe bright flowers (real or foe) for your bedroom or use your fruit/veggie bowl as an accessory in the kitchen to add splashes of those beautiful colours.

Utilise the space you have in your home without rearranging your room that’s oh-so-carefully feng shui aranged. Add a pop of colour and texture with a rug to instantly brighten up the living space.

You can easily brighten up a rather boring room by painting the insides of your shelving unit. You might also want to consider lining it with some beautifully patterned wallpaper to add an accent of texture as well as colour.

If you happen to have a set of stairs in your home, jazzing them up is an excellent opportunity to add some colour to your home. You can do this by simply painting them or using some wallpaper to match them up perfectly with your living room cushions.

Life’s chaos can leave us exhausted, craving simplicity and a break. With simple measures, you could create the perfect garden oasis to get away to when you need a breath of fresh air and to unwind.

The key to creating a relaxing space is to keep it simple, and simple can mean one of two things. The first is that you keep your garden clean cut and uncluttered, working towards a contemporary style, the other is to plant things that require little maintenance but still look beautiful.

If you’re not a fan of growing real grass, or just don’t have the right conditions for it, artificial grass could be the perfect way to keep your garden looking green without having to worry about keeping it watered and fed.

We recommend growing Honey Suckle on your trellis to add a dash of colour and introduce a beautiful relaxing scent to your spa. Other plants that will add to the ambience of your spa garden are jasmine, lavender and roses. Style your seating area up for the night by adding lights to the surrounding trellis, and candles to your table, to create a cosy evening glow.

Another way to bring ambience to your garden is to invest in garden heating. Heat lamps and controlled fire pits or poles are the modern way of bringing immediate heat to your patio, if you have a young family we would recommend the safer option of the fire-free patio heater.

Patio areas can sometimes seem like eyesores, especially if they have sharp corners or cracked surfaces. There are plenty of ways to cover it up, whether you use a layer of spare wood or some hybrid outdoor grass from companies like Fylde Grass. There are plenty of ways to cover up damaged flagstones and slabs, and it’s very easy to make it naturally blend in with the rest of your garden.

Why not incorporate a summerhouse into your garden, or convert an old tool shed to create a mini-retreat from the home? Simply line the interior for insulation, add accessories such as curtains, before adding cushioned seating. If electricity is available you could place a small fridge or juicing machine inside to create your own mini bar or juice bar.

The idea of moving to a new city can be both stressful and exciting depending on your preparedness. It comes with having to acclimatize with the new environment as well as making friends. Here are some of the tips that can make this process less tedious for you.

• Plan ahead. One of the things that will give you a headache is the last-minute rush. If you want your moving to be smooth, it must start at the very beginning which involves packing. Despite the temptation to procrastinate packing, make sure you do it weeks in advance. You can even have a checklist whether on paper or through an app that will guide you through. When it comes to looking for a house, you can look at real estate websites that have listings in the area you will be moving to. This will ease your house hunting process.

• Get free boxes to carry your belongings. You can easily get the boxes from the stores around you. Make sure the boxes are in good condition and can be closed on both sides. This cuts the cost on the bags that you would otherwise have bought. As you pack items in the box, be sure not to overstuff it in a way that is too heavy to lift or the bottom can burst open.

• Hire the services of a moving company. Having a moving company to help you can take a lot of the things you need to do off your plate. Most of the companies will offer manpower in terms of carrying the items, packing them in the vehicle and unpacking at your new home. However, it is advisable to do your research well and ensure the moving charges of the company are within your budget.

• Make arrangements on leaving your present house. With all the craziness that surrounds moving, you may forget to arrange the terms on which you leave your current home. If you are living in your own home, you can decide who to live the house to or list it for sale. If it is a rental, then give the notice as stated in the lease agreement. This ensures you get your deposit back which goes a long way in footing your moving bill.

• Find friends you may know in the new city. Understand that moving to a place where you do not know anyone can be scary and frustrating. You can ask your family or friends to recommend a person you can link up with. The aim of this connection is not necessarily to be best friends but to have a person that will guide you as you adjust in the new city.

• Research the new city. In the era of the internet, you can easily find out about the new home by a click of a button. Find out the malls that are available, restaurants and other places that will be important to you. Also, research on the preferred mode of transport between public and private transport. Knowing these seemingly small details will give you confidence and alleviate any anxiety that comes with being in an unfamiliar place.

• Explore the city. Once you have moved and have finished unpacking, you may be feeling like staying indoors instead of stepping out into the unknown. Resist that urge and step out to learn more about the new place. You can find out how to get to work, the nearest hospital or police station or other community areas. Going out and meeting people on the bus or food joints will help you feel comfortable faster.

Homework, family meetings, entertaining — so much of our daily lives are spent in the warmth of the kitchen.
