When you have a small bathroom, storage space is at a premium. In fact, in a really small bathroom, it might seem like there’s no space to spare for additional storage at all; once the basics are taken care of, there isn’t always much room left for storage carts or cabinets or even shelves. But the real trick to making the most of a small bathroom is not to fight with the space you have, but to make more space where you need it by recessing your storage directly into the wall.

Recessed Shelves

Traditional shelves mount on the surface of a wall, securing to studs and jutting out maybe three or six inches into the room, offering you a little extra room to put things down, but also visually and physically crowding the space. Recessed shelves are essentially holes cut into your wall that are framed in, dry walled over, and painted or tiled so you get the same amount of shelf space, but without anything sticking out into the room. These shelves can be small squares, large rectangles, or even full cabinets with doors, and all offer added shelf space you won’t bump into.

Cabinets

If you like the idea of turning the space inside your bathroom walls into free storage space, but you aren’t extremely confident in your ability to do it yourself, you might want to look instead for wall mounted storage cabinets that are designed to be recessed into the walls. Even toilets can be recessed into your walls, and for a really small bathroom, this can be a surprisingly big space saver. Rather than having a standard toilet and tank, the tank is installed directly into the wall, and the toilet bowl mounted beneath it. This trick will require a fairly extensive renovation, since you’ll need to tear out a chunk of wall and play around with your plumbing to pull it off, but because you don’t have to have clearance for the tank (which is wider than the bowl), you can place the toilet closer to other fixtures, like the vanity or tub, freeing up space that can be used for another purpose, not to mention adding a decent amount of floor space.

Towel Storage

If you have an odd-shaped bathroom, one with a small section of wall that juts out, or just an awkward, thin stretch of wall you can’t do much else with, you can hollow that space out and use it as a sort of open shelf, cubby-style storage. Unlike more conventional recessed shelves, these are small stacked squares that go up and down the length of the wall, each one about the right size to store a roll of toilet paper or a rolled up towel. Not only does this type of recessed shelf make it possible to store a lot of necessities without taking up any extra space, it also makes them feel like decorations.

Building into your walls rather than onto them is one of the best ways to maximize your storage space in a small bathroom. If you do it right, it can add a nice artistic touch to your space, and will make your bathroom look and feel more finished and polished.

I’d like to start this blog with a confession, in order that we can better understand each other and build trust. I’m aware you’re not a priest (and if you are, I won’t consider this admission binding in a religious sense), but here goes: when I first came into the interiors market many moons ago I didn’t really care about it. Yes, I know. Criminal, isn’t it?

This story ends well though, as now I find myself the kind of person who is happy to expatiate on why certain toilets are brilliant, or asseverate that thermostatic showers really are the only choice in your bathroom. With knowledge comes responsibility, so they say, so I have taken up another cause as well, that of proving that functional items can play a very big role in the look of your rooms. More to the point, I now feel that radiators are very important stylistic items.

If you ask me, properly stylish designer radiators came about fairly recently, as designers became more adventurous. I also think radiators became cool due to three separate changes in thought and practice, as below.

Materials

Seems a strange one to kick off with this but it’s an interesting thought. The shapes and malleability of radiator design has really come about due to the incorporation of low carbon steel to build radiator and towel rail bodies. This metal is of course strong, but relatively lightweight, and its composition means that it is extremely amenable to welding. This means that manufacturers can attempt more exciting, angular designs as they know the joints of the radiators will not come under undue stress.

Finish

This was more a change in fashion than anything else. As far as I can think back, radiators were painted into obscurity, to disguise and obfuscate, usually in bland, neutral tones. Now you can get radiators in all manner of hues, from standard white and grey glosses up to glimmering chrome. Perhaps the biggest strides have been made with darker radiators, with black gloss and anthracite finishes demonstrably popular. You can have pretty much anything you want now.

Attitude

Radiators have been tipped on their heads, that’s right. Where horizontal radiators took up a heavy proportion of those fitted in homes, in recent times vertical column radiators have really come to the fore. Slimline and upright, these units present a wonderfully fresh aspect, and look very contemporary. This look is only accentuated by flat panels, available on many models, due to the minimalist profile.

Whether you’re planning a dinner party or just bored with your layout and furniture, sprucing up your dining room is easier than you think. A few simple changes can do wonders to the overall atmosphere of the dining room so your family will enjoy spending time there.
