Nobody wants to get sick.

In fact, getting sick is a terrible feeling.

And when you’re in the middle of it, one of the things you tend to think about the most is…

“How could I have prevented this from happening? Because I wish I would have done it.”

And yet, all too often, even when we’re presented with plenty of information for how to stay healthy and prevent illness in the future, most people simply don’t do the stuff that’s required to stay healthy.

The reasons for this are pretty standard.

Doing healthy stuff that actually helps you to stay healthy in the future isn’t always easy—especially in a world that really glamorizes processed food, junk food, sitting instead of getting up and moving, minimizing sleep, etc.

So let’s talk about some of the most common-sense ways to prevent illness in the future, starting with stuff that you can literally start doing today.

Some of this stuff might seem basic. But it’s actually incredibly important! And a lot of people overlook this stuff far too often.

1. Eat Healthily

Unfortunately, people tend to have pretty poor diets in our modern world. This is surprising, seeing as how many of us could buy healthy foods in the produce section. But alas—modern, processed food is highly addictive!

And poor nutrition can significantly increase your risk for all kinds of diseases and conditions.

People eat far too much processed food that contains processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup, seed oils, and other unhealthy stuff.

These ingredients make food unhealthy and destructive.

And yet, all too often, this stuff makes up the bulk of most people’s diets.

To help prevent illness in the future, it’s a really good idea to try to eat healthier food options.

Fruits, vegetables, and meats are a fantastic place to start. Whole foods with zero processed additives are sure to set you up for a better diet experience (and better health outcomes) in the long term.

2. Exercise

Unfortunately, most people aren’t getting adequate exercise—and it plays havoc with their health and wellness in the long term.

The human body really needs to be up and moving. They say that ‘sitting is the new smoking,’ and they’re absolutely right about it.

For best results, you should not only engage in basic movement (walking, typical exercise, an active lifestyle) but also aerobic exercise and strength training to really capitalize on your health and wellness outcomes.

3. Get Good Sleep

Far too many modern humans aren’t getting adequate sleep for long-term health and wellness.

And this is absolutely detrimental to your well-being in the long term.

For best results, humans should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

To help yourself with this, try to maintain a normal bedroom routine where you cut back on caffeine use later in the day, and where you avoid looking at screens and devices (the blue light from these devices can disrupt your normal circadian rhythm) within 2 hours of trying to go to sleep.

It’s also a good idea to turn the thermostat down a bit when you sleep. For a lot of people, this results in overall better sleep quality.

4. Stop Drinking

Drinking alcohol is one of the worst things you can do for your health and wellness. And it’s totally preventable. You just need to stop drinking it!

Instead of drinking alcohol, you might want to consider smoking some cannabis. You could also vape it, consume it in edible form, or even take tinctures.

One really cool thing about vaping cannabis is that you can actually reuse vaped cannabis for all kinds of other cool stuff. (Veriheal published an awesome post about this.)

It’s just a much healthier way to unwind and relax, plus it boasts health benefits without being so toxic to your body.
