Olympic Year in London Brings Fresh Design to 2012’s City under the Spotligh

Not only is gaining the opportunity to host the Olympic Games one of the greatest honours for any nation, it also provides a spotlight, and the world’s gaze will soon be focused on London. The people of the United Kingdom are well aware of this responsibility and are ready to show the world what they have to offer. With major development taking place throughout London to support the Games, there is no shortage of fresh new design talent. Despite the initial opposition to the 2012 logo, the Olympics is bringing fresh design to the capital to perfectly compliment the sport.

    Olympic year in London 2012

    Design in the capital

There are a number of world-class projects backed by major investments; soon to be unveiled as we approach the opening ceremony of the Games. The most notable new design is Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond’s Orbit sculpture, which will certainly be under the world’s glare during July and August. Despite the games and Olympic village being located in East London, West London will also play a key role and will showcase England’s architectural landmarks with Wembley stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground and the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon. West London, more specifically Notting Hill estate agents will tell you the west has greatly benefited from the Olympics with foreign investment increasing dramatically in the last 2 years. The venues and design have certainly enhanced the already affluent areas.

    Iconic Design

    olympic london 2012 logo

Locog has approached the 2012 Olympics with a modern and dynamic theme to the design, first shown off with the pink logo. Although some compared it to Lisa Simpson playing a saxophone, the design has grown on people, and has gone some way to vindicate the £400,000 paid to design agency Wolf Olins. The two mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, are similar and designed to represent two drops of steel from a steelworks in Bolton.

    Influence on Architecture

The area where design has had the greatest impact is in London’s new architecture, with a massive redevelopment of East London where the games will be hosted. The Olympic Village has been designed by architects Fletcher Priest, Arup and West 8 and will be home to 17,000 athletes. The apartments will then be turned over to the public and are perfectly suited to city living with spacious gardens in the centre, although the design has been criticised for being too much like the housing blocks of the 60s. The race for foreign investors and businesses to call the Olympic zone home has already begun, as many have already realised the long-term financial opportunity that Europe’s largest regeneration project has to offer. On the Greenwich Peninsula is the 02 Arena – which is already a thriving hub of bars and restaurants for the South East, opposite is located the London ExCel centre with a building designed at the cutting edge of architecture. The University College London is planning to invest in the area by creating a new campus within the Olympic zone. At the moment and for future years to come, the East End of London is set to be the most sought after place to live, work and study.

Animal Prints to Spice Up Your Interiors

Whimsical, earthy, primitive or exotic, or all together, animal prints are definitely timeless. Although it’s a style dating from long time ago- colonial style -it will always be in fashion in terms of interior design, today being rather a refined minimalism due to the multiple textures and intricate prints, unique details and accessories, and soothing colors. Exotic wood furniture, tropical prints, bamboo, rattans, decorative items illustrating plants and animals are now back in trend this year, designers being inspired for sofas, armchairs, textiles and decorations from exotic culture.

Zebras, tigers, giraffes, cheetahs, impalas and rhinos and leopards prints are easier to incorporate in a home decor than you may think, their attention-grabbing patterns enhance any decor style and brings a sense of adventure. They look great and fit both classic, modern or vintage interior designs. Bold and eye-catching, animal-inspired fabrics and accessories can add playfulness, drama, elegance or whimsy, calling the wild indoors and giving the wow factor, but requires attention, imagination and good taste in using them because too much can overwhelm the space.

  • Feng Shui like a House Insurance

Feng Shui like a House Insurance

Feng Shui is a term we all have heard about, but how many of us actually know anything about it? For many of us it is a bit of ‘magic’ that says you will have good luck if you position a pot plant on your desk in a certain way, while for others it is much more: it examines how our environment affects us showing us that there is a link between our surroundings and our inner being. The principle of Feng Shui is to introduce positive changes and influences into our lives so that our surroundings help us achieve what we want rather than going against us. Feng shui is originated in China and it’s tied up in a great number of Chinese theories and practices including the yin and yang as well as traditional Chinese medicines including acupuncture.

    living-room-in-feng-shui-spirit

These all aim to find a balance between the elements of the universe. The Chinese saw Chi as a vital part of this, as a natural energy force which, depending upon its flow through buildings, can influence how that place feels and how we feel while in it. Within Feng Shui there are 5 natural elements: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. All of these five elements relate to a specific compass direction as well as colours, shapes, aspirations and seasons as well as having metaphoric representations. Feng shui uses these five elements to influence the space in buildings beneficially to help balance these elements out so no one of them has control of an area. This allows the chi to flow freely through the space, allowing positive influences in. It is important to note that nowhere in Feng Shui literature or the Tao teachings which it is derived from, don’t say Feng Shui will automatically get rid of all problems and cause life to run smoothly – so remember that things like house insurance are still important!  Feng Shui opens up spaces to possibilities and opportunities.

  • How to use Green Color for Interior Design

How to use Green Color for Interior Design

Green is the color you find in nature the most abundant and it is related to life, fertility, nature, harmony, freshness, freeddom. It is the most relaxing color to the eye. Enveloping, soothing, refreshing, tonic, green color relaxes both mind and physically, bringing good mood, relaxation, meditation, balance, fantasy, pleasant, relaxing and calm, intense impression of freshness, facilitates disconnecting nervous, feeling far out into space and due to this many effects, green is used successfully in many areas. It has a multitude of shades and even this year is a trendy color as you already know being  one of the 10 most proeminent hues for this year, exactly one shade of green and that’s is Cockatoo.

Speaking about interior design, the colors are those through which a house can get personality, are those that create different optical illusions and have also a strong influence on our psyhological level as we told you in a previous article the psychology of color for interior design. Using green in interior design with appropriate other shades of green or with other colors with a well contoured destination may have special effects. Use this color especially when you want to inspire a fresh and natural atmosphere.

    1. In proper amounts, green can be used successfully in almost any room, the living room being one of them. In such a room, green can be on an accent wall, on furniture, decorative pillows, rugs, accessories, paintings, lighting, vases, in combination with other colors according to your taste. For example, if you opt for a green sofa, this one will become the focal point of the living room and will give a modern fresh look.

In combination with blue shades is perfect for your bedroom, both of them are shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate. An alternative is to opt for curtains and green bedding.

    3. This color give a sensation of freshness and increase appetite, so it’s widely used for dining room or kitchens designs in combinations with other colors that has similar effects like red, orange and even yellow. They action like an invitation to enjoy your everyday meals. If you don’t believe us, take for example a famous restaurant, Mcdonald’s,  where if you pay attention to the colors used, you’ll see that are exactly these ones. If the budget does not allow you to have accent walls, furniture or tiles in green tints, then you can enter the green in your kitchen through accessories: media plates, salt and pepper accessories, bottles, dishes, boxes and various containers for spices, plates of fruit and green vegetables. You can also opt for a green wallpaper. It can also have other colors and can be striped, floral prints or any other.
